Akumal
Akumal is Mayan for "Place of The Turtle".

One special activity that the whole family can participate in is the "Turtle Watch" program which is organized by Akumal's
Ecological Center. In May and June, groups of turtle watchers can witness a giant turtle lay her eggs in a nest on the beach. In July and August, turtle enthusiasts can observe the babies hatch and adopt a turtle!

History :
Until 1925, Akumal was part of a expansive coconut plantation. It was discovered by an expedition sponsored by the New York Times, and in 1958, a newly formed dive club which is now called C.E.D.A.M., brought Akumal to the attention of world class divers.

Soon, the island's reputation grew and more and more visitors came by boat from Cozumel to visit. In the early 1960's, a road was finally built and since then the island has grown to become a tourist attraction. Despite its popularity, the island remains peaceful and unpolluted.
